Hysteresis and turbulent vortex breakdown in transitional swirling jets

چکیده

Vortex breakdown (VB) in unconfined swirling jets occurs as either a bubble form of vortex (BVB) or conical (CVB). This computational study examines flow features these forms for Reynolds number at which VB is accompanied by transition to turbulence ( $Re = 1000$ , based on inflow jet radius and centreline velocity). Large eddy simulations were performed with the condition Maxworthy profile models laminar, axisymmetric jet, effect varying swirl strength was investigated. BVB observed lower strengths than those CVB occurs. With increasing swirl, regular wide-open types occur. Spiral coherent structures that develop examined using spectral proper orthogonal decomposition. Further, means hysteresis studies, it established turbulent are bistable forms. Similarly, shown two also bistable. The difference recirculation zone (RZ) sizes between greatly reduced when compared laminar counterparts. postulated reason misidentification (RZ approximately shape) (spheroidal RZ) some previous studies. present highlights distinct CVB, can potentially be used towards improving designs swirl-stabilized combustors.

Axisymmetric vortex breakdown Part 1. Confined swirling flow

A comparison between the experimental visualization and numerical simulations of the occurrence of vortex breakdown in laminar swirling flows produced by a rotating endwall is presented. The experimental visualizations of Escudier (1984) were the first to detect the presence of multiple recirculation zones and the numerical model presented here, consisting of a numerical solution of the unstead...

Vortex Dynamics in Transitional and Turbulent Boundary Layers

The dynamics of transitional and turbulent boundary layers is explored via a hybrid vortex filament/finite volume simulation scheme in which vortical structures are identified without the constraints imposed by the traditional assumption that they are synonymous with rotational regions. Vortex furrows consisting of elongated, streamwise-oriented, raised perturbations to the wall vorticity layer...

Impact of rotating and fixed nozzles on vortex breakdown in compressible swirling jet flows

Vortex breakdown of swirling, round jet flows is investigated in the compressible, subsonic regime by means of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). This is achieved by solving the compressible Navier–Stokes equations on a cylindrical grid using high-order spatial and temporal discretization schemes. The Reynolds number is Re = ρ c w ◦ c R ◦/μ◦c = 5000 and the flow is moderately compressible with ...
